Though not exactly sure today we celebrate William Shakespeare’s birthday some 456 years ago. Born in Stratford upon Avon I can claim some heritage fame as I helped build the town centre shopping scheme there nearly 44 years ago.
If he were around he would have seen a Comedy of Errors at the way the Government has handled Covid 19. We still don’t know the accurate numbers of those who have recovered, numbers tested and if all the deaths announced were due to solely to the nasty virus. Mr Witty the Government Health Expert does not look witty indeed he looks more like Dr Death as he tells us all As you like it the numbers each day. His accuracy however is in my reckoning flawed and is certainly not Measure for Measure.
Meantime Matt Hancock seeks to assure the Public that it’s Much ado about Nothing and all a storm in a Tempest. Fortunately what started as a Winter’s Tale is now a Spring horror. A Merchant of Venice has contacted me and lamented that Italy has had more deaths than the UK and that Two Gentlemen of Verona are helping UK Government learn from their nightmare. Eventually we are assured that there will be a Taming of the Shrew virus and it will fade into the history of obscurity.
Boris Johnson remains in recovery and Carrie who Carries his baby and has reminded Keir Starmer that Love’s Labour Lost by an 83 majority and that any criticism he may wish to pour out will not please that Merry Wife at Windsor who with her husband Phillip are resisting contamination behind their Castle Walls.
All’s Well That Ends Well I say and we can look forward to a new season and look back at this Midsummers Dream as a Nightmare. Like the 12 Apostles we need a Twelfth Night miracle and God speed to the disappearance of the disease.
Alas poor Virus we knew you well and to be or not to be, we have suffered outrageous fortune but better days lie ahead and we will all return safely to the World’s Stage.
Happy Birthday William.
