I was reading yesterday about the profile of Tim Ccok, CEO of Apple. On the face of it he looks , lean bespectacled nice guy. The article painted a different picture speaking of his highly intolerant leadership, his tendency to publicly explode to humiliate people and generally ruin their lives.
One of course can make excuse, he’s under immense pressure, he’s the top man, so on and so forth. However this manic bully type leadership is the perfect example of bad leadership. I’ve encountered many Cook like characters in my career and too many Cook types spoil the broth of life. Very often they are bully boys who by virtue of their own insecurities behave poorly.
Very often the Kings of the Corporate World are mere wimps who inherit the great and often add nothing to greater. Apple the seed of now deceased Steve Jobs is probably one of the greatest Companies of all time. It’s products are superb and I say that as an avid user. However it upsets me and concerns me when I hear these reports as Companies under this style of leadership will in season fail.
Leadership is set by example and the ability to steer and guide are skills found not bashed out. For sure the Boss must be unique and someone to look up to not cower from. I have challenged bullies in the workplace and when you do they inevitably step back. Challenge a good leader and invariably he or she will explain and move forward. Then it’s up to you if you wish to follow.
Jesus was a model leader, who never humiliated his staff but merely announced at His meetings that one would later betray him, one would soon deny Him and some might even doubt Him. He did not go into rage nor did they cower but by their own conviction they saw what was right. Cook might do well to read the Gospel of John to see what good leadership is.
As for Apple, well it caused many problems when it hung on that Eden tree and in there lies the shortfall of mere man and the likes of Cook and many of us who fail and fall so often in whatever way. As for Steve Job he suffered a Job experience of course when he was thrown out of the Company he founded as it failed only to then return later to lead the Company to where it is today. That’s good leadership.Mr Cook please.
