Reports today that Lorry drivers will soon be able to take their grip of the steering wheel and watch videos or text whilst moving shows again that we have entered a new era.
Speaking of grip I was amazed to see the silence of London yesterday particularly the Parliament area. How can it be that at a time of national crisis those governing are on holiday. The PM should have set up his bunker War Room for war it is, against a virus that has wiped away life as we knew it. Yesterday there were more colossal announcements of job losses and where furlough ends what then ?
Or are we just going to free wheel ? One might say there’s no issue as Wall Street climbs to record highs and Bankers keep being given free money. Inflation up to 1% but I say there’s always a lull before the storm. Perhaps no one will ever return to their offices, perhaps the Canary in the Mine at Canary Wharf is already dead for no one is there to check. I drove down Buckingham Palace Road at 3pm yesterday unaccompanied by any other vehicle, Kings Road a slight hold up due to its narrowness. I tried to pay the Congestion and Emission charge for entering the Capital but the call centre was closed and the TFL internet down with technical fault.
TFL is run by the Mayors Office and someone must be concerned especially as the gates to the Victoria underground were shut. This all sounds very domestic and rant but the fact is London has been switched off.
The knock on effect is and will be immense and the Stock markets are telling a different story than what’s seen on the ground. Yes it could be a Dickens moment with a Tale of Two Cities and the delivery business is now where life is at but that in turn will be affected if the press button buying power dissipates. The NHS is flat out but without taxes to fund it then the NHS could be flat broke.
As I drove by Buckingham Palace where tourists tread it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. The Tourists are just not here and the hoteliers and restaurants propped up by discount meals. So if Boris is here and not on his Scottish holiday would it make any difference. I think it would as all the soldiers need to see their leader in the thick of battle and Napoleon coming through on his white horse instilled many a victory.
Boris on a White Horse coming down Whitehall would be good. We need to cancel all holidays 2020 and get back to our base camp or you may return to see them desolated and destroyed. PS don’t forget Brexit , it starts in 14 weeks ( less than 100 days ) and still no deal.
