After many months my daughter took me to the movies in Bristol at the Everyman Cinema which Hitler bombed in the Second World War and was rebuilt in its original Art Deco. I watched the movie on a couch and someone served me a meal from the shadows.
The movie was written and directed by Christopher Nolan and was a Spy Drama about a Black handsome Spy who manipulates time past and present to prevent World War Three. Kenneth Branagh late of The Royal Shakespeare Company plays the Russian bad guy.
I left the Cinema after an epic 2 and a half hours totally confused and so unable to explain what I had watched had to look up Wikipedia for an explanation. It told me that it cost $200m to make and had taken $20m in its opening weekend. Michael Caine late of Zulu plays a British Intelligence buff for 5 minutes in the movie and still looks more like Alfie than Smiley.
The memorable thing about the evening is that we all sat there socially distanced and wearing masks save when we had to eat. I bemoaned ‘ what’s it all about Alfie ‘ as we left and the usherette ( they still call them that ) said ‘ yeah that’s what I think ‘ . Nolan may be a genius but for me he’s no comparison to Cecil B De Mille whose 10 Commandments blew my mind away as a 6 year old when that Red Sea opened.
Nevertheless that black handsome spy John David Washington was fabulous and if I could fight like him then there’s no stopping me wherever I go. The Ice cream was good the tea was better but the movie called Tenet broke one golden principle for me in that it failed to entertain, was too complex and Nolan tried too hard.
I say bring back Hollywood.
