I remember being at Scout Camp in Abbotsford, Scotland, ( the home of Walter Scott ) on the 31st July 1964. I heard on the radio that Jim Reeves had died in a plane crash. My heart sank.
Jim was the reason why I was here. It was his song that my parents fell in love through, the command to ‘ put your sweet lips to the phone, to tell the man to turn the jukebox way down low ‘ . But for Jim I would never have been in the tent. His words, his voice had been the spark, the inspiration to go forward to create life. Jim was only 40 when he died. Many years later I went to his home his birth place in Nashville , the legend.
Words and music are powerful they will change everything and words spoken Into our lives will have a lasting effect. My uncle told me ‘ son they’re making no new land ‘ that was the spark to think of property as a business. In Holloway Prison I once told a female inmate that she played the tambourine well at a concert we had organised . As she cried in response she told me ‘ nobody has ever praised me in my life ‘.
Words are powerful and we need to choose them wisely there is more power in the tongue and like the rudder that small part can change the direction of an oil tanker. In much the same way a song will stay in your heart and memory Bank forever it can raise any emotion and bring us back to many a scene. On my I phone music library I now have a diary of my entire life and as I listen to all the songs I drift to and from on my life timeline.
My friend was approached in a street once by a secretary he had many years previously employed. It was the girls mother who wanted to thank him for the words he had spoken into her life that had changed her into the famous person she now was.
Words can of course do great damage and music can bring back bad memories, Like Adagio reminds me of 9/11 or Perlman on violin in the theme to Schindler’s List of worst of mankind. Today be extra careful of what you say and what you hear. Today could be a life changer for you or another. A kind word can be a game changer in business or at home.
I’m not sure if cafes still have jukeboxes or sweet lips can be put to the actual telephone as we now live in a time where my jukebox and my phone are in my hand as I write. Ok then ‘ put your sweet lips to the Apple I phone and turn your library music down low ‘
It’s not quite the same I know, nothing rarely is but nevertheless thanks again Jim and I look forward to meeting up one day. Meantime enjoy the song.
