The Financial Times publication today of Europe’s league of top Business Schools makes interesting read. Presumably this is the last year UK contends as we prepare for the EU Exit , Brexit.
Interestingly the UK barely makes the bulk of the top 10 which I find worrying for the UK. Numero Uno or I should perhaps say nombre uno is HEC Paris. Now this league may be slightly squiff like the Times Rich List but the gist is that we don’t dominate and the Oxbridge contribution is not at the top indeed Cambridge Judge ranks 15th and Said at Oxford joint 10th. I think London still retains top notch as a financial centre and top notch as a European City but what will it look like in 10 years ?
Education is a vital offering for the UK and if the Chinese for example intend to still flock to Imperial ranked 18th and Oxbridge then we will need to show more willingness to do business with these guys as they return home, indeed that Alumni connect is surely the other big plus than just selling them a place spot at the Schools. That question is also in the hands of the UK Government who must decide in the round for example is it their way or Huawei. Meantime London Business School ranks runner up to HEC and leads the charge for the UK.
We need to up our game at root level at primary and secondary schools to teach the kids about money, what it is and how to make it, invest it and keep it. Basic business like knowing profit and loss and what a balance sheet says is paramount and perhaps more important . This fires up the juices of the kids and breeds competition, incentive and industry. We need to fight back and fight forward not look back on Empire and the lost Kingdom.
On the eve of Christmas and our goodbye to Europe, likely now with a no deal all because of fish is certainly decidedly fishy and will leave a rotten taste with our neighbours. Education is the foundation of human rights and we must improve now at ground level especially post Brexit and into the future.
