Have yourself a Merry little Christmas.

‘ Have yourself a Merry little Christmas ‘ was written by Martin and Blane in 1943 and sung by Judy Garland. The song featured in the 1944 MGM movie ‘ Meet me in St Louis and reached number 27 in the charts. It was written at a time of war, an era of battle, it was sad yet optimistic , reflective yet looking forward to better days, ‘ next year all our troubles will be out of sight ‘, ‘ next year all our troubles will be miles away ‘
2020 was a year of similar war, a global battle against a virus that effectively has cancelled the gathering of Christmas. Yet we are reminded of ‘ golden days ‘ ‘ when faithful friends dear to us will be near to us once more ‘. ‘ some day soon we will all be together ‘ meantime ‘ we will muddle through somehow ‘
For many unable to see their loved ones, some for the final time it’s a tough season. For some however Christmas is a heartbreaker if they remember loved ones been and gone , never to be with them again. For those Sick at this time think of better days ahead and your condition temporary.
Alas let us not forget that it is the anniversary of the birth of Jesus , born into difficult times as Saviour of the world and by His birth the ultimate life vaccine to a corrupted world. Some will follow Him, some will not, some have still not heard of Him. For those that continually muddle through life without purpose it may now be time to get to know Him through reading the Gospel of say John.
The song is a song of hope for without hope there is little life purpose and if we see our troubles as a permanent fix we will miss out on the opportunities that lay ahead. Wherever you are this 2020 Christmas don’t despair, don’t give up hope and most of all try love that neighbour of yours, just as Jesus commanded. Generosity and kindness can be administered 2 metres apart, a gift of kind word, genuine enquiry or act speak volumes from any distance.
