Is this just the way it is ?

Though in 1807 the UK Parliament outlawed slavery, we find that for the next 25 years almost 700,000 people remained in Slavery. The powerful West India Interest supported by leading Prime Ministers including Times and Spectator ensured slavery lasted till 1833. At that point the people were compensated not those who were enslaved but to the slave owners entrenching the power of the Establishment families under Britain to these days. The compensation amounted to today’s equivalent of £340 billion. All this is according to Michael Taylor, author of ‘ The Interest ‘.

To date the UK Government has incurred expenditure scheduled to now rise to £340 billion in 2021 on the economic survival from Covid 19. The fact that both disastrous events have cost the same amount should we pause and think about this a little longer ? In the first event we see the lengths that a British Government went to defend the indefensible in the name of profit, proving that the ultimate triumph of abolition came at a bitter cost. The numbers of enslaved were 2 and a half times the then population of London , today’s equivalent 30 million people, nearly half of the UK population enslaved from the benefit of the few.

World War Two cost Britain around £340 billion in today’s money and only recently have we paid the debt. Covid 19 the defence to save the economy will probably take a generation to repay. Again the expenditure has gone into the hands of a few with clearly identifiable nepotism from those in power and those Companies profiting from PPE to vaccine. Nothing changes and history does seem to repeat itself. To date 74 million have contracted Covid 19 and in the UK 67,000 have died , 10 times less than those enslaved.

The darkness of the early nineteenth century in Britain , the darkness of World War and the darkness of Covid 19 indicates that we seem to be reaping what we sow. Are these horrific events wake up calls to humanity. Is someone trying to tell us that there are consequences to how we treat each of us, our fellow human or are we to continue the way it is. These plague of events are almost biblical but is anyone in power looking at what changes we need to make. Or will this just happen again, is this just the way it is ? Galatians 6 v 7 tells us that man will reap what he sows. Time to change what we sow I reckon, don’t you ?

Or is that just the way it is ?
