This blog has a large following from India and an even larger one from China. Over one third of the world population inhabit these two nations. According to a report in the Times London newspaper the two of them are at battle stations on their Kashmir /Nepal borders. China it seems on a land grab to push through on their Belt Road strategy into Pakistan. 100 square miles has been lost to date to China and 24 Indian soldiers died in Summer 2020 defending their territory. None of this is new as it seems the land grab has been going on for a long time. With both nations nuclear equipped the obvious concern is that this could literally mushroom towards an irreversible confrontation.
Both are proud nations with China set to become the largest economic power by 2028 and India the third largest economic power by 2030. Their current annual GDP figures are $13trillion and $3trillion respectively. The stakes are high and only if stupidity reigns will full scale wall materialise. Mr Modi and Mr Xi need to get together and draw a line in the rocks once and for all. Grant you Kashmir is one of the most beautiful places on the earth but an ugly war has no place at any time.
India discovered the reality of zero and China gave us the Abacus. Their civilisations have made vast contributions to mankind yet their politics are different. China which purports all are equal and India with its caste system that all are different. India boasts democracy and China is ruled by one party. Both systems work and though not trouble free are both propelled to lead the world economic tables in this decade. Both nations are racing towards the Moon landing and both nations have ambitious Space programmes.
Both are Asian nations set to emerge above and beyond the Americas or European offerings dwarfing Britain in its splendid isolation albeit 20th century conquerors. India probably the most glamorous with its Bollywood offerings again China with its cultural excellence in ballet and opera. With the likes of the Great Wall and Summer Palace in China against the Taj Mahal and Golden Temple these are truly world heritage locations with an historic abundance and unique cuisines.
Much to offer and much expected the romance of India and the intrigue of China compete on the world stage. 56 million visit China annually whilst 10 million visit India . The Army of China at 2.1million outnumbers the 1.2million of India yet modern warfare is fought with laser and drone, robot and ruin. The tools of war eradicate in great numbers with equal speed and the prospect of war must be slim. The battle is economic and social, the victor looks like China in the foreseeable future. Let’s pray that 2021 sees peace not conflict and that each nation see the plus in the latter and filly on the former
Let’s pray for the peace of China and India, two great nations on the brink of their finest days. Let’s not spoil the Party but embrace the new dawn and the better days ahead.
