World Sleep Day

I trust you’re fully awake as you read this and not in bed with your phone or computer. This is one of the taboos on World Sleep day. For best of health my good friend Aki Hintsa told me that we need 8 hours sleep per night preferably in a dark room to maximise our good health. Ok I know it’s one third of your life but to survive the remaining two thirds you need shut eye one third. Your circadian clock needs to keep good time and you can’t afford to be early or late. Macho bankers working without sleep or lawyers billing those waking hours will eventually burn out. Only God never slumbers or sleeps according to Psalm 121 because He has to keep watch of us all in the time zones.

The earliest time zone is + 14 hours and as the globe spins at roughly 1000 mph the day flows from east to west and back again in endless spin as we all take turns under the duvet. Sleep brings different perspective on issues and we are often told ‘ to sleep on it ‘. My good friend and brain surgeon Rodica Malos tells me that the brain is 38 times more active when we sleep as we get reprogrammed and rebooted for the next day. Whatever is going on up there as you shut eye is clearly good for you. Sleep depravation is used as a torture and we all know how lack of sleep can affect us. Thatcher and Churchill got by on 4 hours sleep per night and those that lie in bed are often berated by frustrated parents. Those taking medications are affected by drowsiness and some of the things we watch on those boxes would put anyone to sleep. The mention of Brexit for 3 years and Covid 19 this past year would knock out the best of us.

As we find our brains each morning and adjust their reception with a coffee or juice marvel at its intricacy to perform so many functions and understand that you have to stop to recharge and re ready for that to come. On World sleep day read those articles with best tips to get the best rest. Insomnia is a terrible thing and to perfect what’s best for you takes time. I travelled once to Hong Kong for a weekend meeting and return. The time zones and jet lag wiped me out as I zombied on Monday into my office. I was as useless as anything and it takes on average 1day to readjust for every hour time difference. When I lived in China I would finish work there then turn to the office opening in London. USA deals were a bit more difficult to work on. Anyway my Father always said ‘ you’re a long time dead ‘ and you’ll have plenty time to sleep in the times ahead.

So an early night for us all tonight. Sleep well my friends, sweet dreams and avoid those nightmares. Count sheep and rest. Try it.
