Divorce, the foundation premise of the Church of England and the ousting of the national Roman Catholic Church in Britain, some 500 years on has not prevented reemergence of the same old same old.
Divorce once frowned upon prevented many a Second Church Marriage with token blessing and Registry Office legal sign up is now becoming a thing of the past. The anti RC establishment and non forgiveness of Gunpowder plots resulting in RC ban on high office has been forsaken. We know God ‘ hates divorce ‘ but He accepts human error in judgment and His mercy does flow by the River called Grace. This same river failed to flow through Rome and Canterbury till now.
Harry married divorced Meghan in the Royal Chapel Windsor and twice divorced Boris now married Carrie in the other high worship place in Westminster. Man makes up the rules or changes them to suit but that’s what man does. God only hates divorce because He knows the angst and pain that it causes. Pain for those left behind or sired siblings that will often go on to repeat the ways of their parents, almost a behavioural DNA.
The convenience of being blind to marriages not within the RC sacrament is an elegant amendment to God’s contract yet He still sees the rue. I remember the fish only Friday as a boy and the covered veil of women’s heads all gone now and now new rules around union tailored to suit the PC and the PM. I feel sorry for those who were forced to live by the old rules in fear of excommunication and refused communions. How do we explain all that away ?
I’m not sure if Boris will follow Blair into the RC flock and whether this could be the start of a spiritual revival, perhaps now the Number 10 Commandments? I’m not sure if having children before marriage is the new norm and going 4th to multiply is now going 1st ? Or is the Church just a quiet and convenient place to tie a knot and throw confetti upon people ? It’s all very confusing I must say and the Church leaders are making and amending rules with very grey pens similar to a fog, no visibility reigning.
Is it Carrie on Regardless of our forefathers and get with the times ? or is it time to set out once again the terms of engagement. Then we will be able to respect each other again and remain in or out members of these man made Institutions. I wish Carrie and Boris every happiness every endurance for the inevitable ups and downs, sickness and health, rich and poor that marriage brings. Similar to the political space they both occupy with hopefully a longer term than that provides.
