As Boring as Borehamwood

Borehamwood is a town circa 30,000 people , 12 miles from Charing Cross in South Hertfordshire. Home of Elstree Studios maker of movies like Dr Zhivago and Dam Busters, once home of Sir Ray Davies ( of Kinks fame ) and Simon Cowell. The question is Borehamwood Boring ? Well it was to me as a 15 year old schoolboy when to earn a shilling I traipsed the streets there delivering Double Glazing and Central Heating advertisements to Mr and Mrs Suburbia.

That was a long time ago but boredom is a trait that we are beginning to see much more of as the Covid lockdown and Brexit Politics of these last 5 years haven taken its toll. People are bored with the same old same old, watching England play soccer sideways and backwards, bored hearing debacle after debacle in the Corporate world from Carillion to Greensill. My mother told me that only boring people get bored and she may have been right. However boredom is seriously affecting the mental health of teenagers and septuagenarians. Known now as the Year of Monotony 2021 has seen people reporting their daily behaviours and though a disciplined lifestyle has benefits doing the same thing day in day out is dangerous to ones health. Probably one in days of old when people worked 40 years for the same company then retired and died shortly thereafter. The idiom of ‘ to die with boredom ‘ speaks of being unable to tolerate and though cause of death has never been recorded as boredom in itself. A boring tool used in 1768 was a slow drill and from that is derived the condition and word boredom. According to a survey by American researchers boring people usually have lower intelligence measured by their IQ.

Boredom is not to be confused with Waiting , you can be bored just waiting but you can’t wait to be bored. Additionally you can be bored and other people can bore you. Boredom is not an individual thing it can be a two way street. To counter the condition one needs to engage in learning something new or taking part in something different. In an era of multiple choices and ultra efficient communication facilities it is disturbing to find that the condition of individual boredom is on the increase. Mankind needs to address the fundamental causes and tackle the debilitating syndrome.

Borehamwood the home of British Hollywood was renowned for stirring the imaginations and therefore can’t possibly be labelled as Boring. Mr and Mrs Suburbia who may have lived there have managed to at least manage their expectations from life and besides the tad rivalry of keeping up with the Jones’s and having 2.4 kids their lives are fulfilled and they sit there with double glazing and central heating fully fitted. Looking back I did a great service to the people of Borehamwood and though bored myself at the time can congratulate me for my contribution to mankind.
