My final blog on Euro 2020 and having underrated the English team in predicting every match outcome wrong you will be pleased to see I reckon an Italian double this weekend. Yes an Italian man to win Wimbledon and an Italian victory at Wembley.
The English team as they fight for Queen and Country will not forget the fact that if they win each player will receive £461,000. This is far larger than the £1000 each player earned when England won the World Cup in 1966. With inflation £100 in 1966 is worth £1900 so Bobby Moore and his mates earned £19000 in today’s money. Ok that’s 24 times less than Captain Harry Kane and his mates could earn. Now that’s what they call Soccer Inflation fuelled by the Communication networks, world of advertising and Media when compounded amount to fortunes for the participants.
It has always bemused me that many a supporter on the terraces will never earn in a lifetime what these players earn in a single match yet they will die for their team. In their fervour I expect they are blinded by that fact and if they were to dwell on it I hate to think of outcome. Of course Soccer players have a limited career span and injury or other misfortune can rob them of all of the riches. Many of the 1966 team ( only 4 of the 11 are still alive ) ended broke and even the rich boys today can fritter and litter their fortunes or fall victim to those that so called manage them.
It’s going to be an exciting Sunday come what may and if the Italian wins Wimbledon he will pick up £1.7m. Adept at the small ball pays more than adept with the big ball. One statistic hasn’t changed and contrary to myth the ball used in 1966 and used tomorrow are of equal weight. Only wages outstripped inflation , the ball has remained the same. Anyway enough maths for today enjoy the game and best wishes to both teams. If it goes to penalties just watching then remind yourself that the boys have over £5 million at stake.
