Free at Last , Free at Last.

Martin Luther King famously declared that the day would come when we would be ‘Free at Last, Free at Last, thank God Almighty we are Free at Last ‘ This was an incredible moment some 58 years ago next month. It was an epic moment.

Tomorrow is Freedom day in the UK , some 16 months after the biggest lockdown and lock in ever experienced in Britain, more so than even during those two world wars of the 20th Century as the Government chose to protect us from us. Of the 5.4m who caught the Covid virus 129,000 died against the global catch of 190 million with just over 4 million deaths. In percentage terms the virus killed 2% of those infected. Notwithstanding the addition to the global population on a net basis was still 80 million ( 140m births against 60m deaths ) or in percentage terms less than one tenth of one percent .

Of course vaccinations and responsible isolation reduced deaths and in UK we avoided the worse predictions of the mathematical epidemiologists like Ferguson at Imperial College. Yet greater damage was unseen in the guise of economic ruination and over a period when the Government paid the wages of those employed , borrowing vast sums to do so. That damage has yet to be assessed in terms of permanent basis but one thing is for sure inflation has arrived like Covid an unseen virus that will ultimately cause untold damage. The printing of money over 12 years and the false markets of low interest rates masking the damage unseen but soon to surface.

Tomorrow is so called Freedom Day when we can all get back out there but we shall be returning to a new world where our mobility can be questioned our lives controlled and the old ways will have passed. Is that so bad ? Many are wishing that the new way of life would stay but change is afoot. Freedom of course is ultimately within , controlled by our behaviours , our responses and our expectations. The Freedom that we enjoy is spiritual not temporal for man will let you down , incapable of fulfilling our real needs as and like the deer that pants for the water.

Luther King had a dream for many have lived through a nightmare losing loved ones and going on home alone. Yet one day Luther King will be right and Freedom Day will come alas it will not be here on earth but trust me it will come. Then and then only will we taste real Freedom again with our loved ones in a world where infection and inflation will not exist, a Freedom unimaginable, unknown and unbelievable. Now that’s something to look forward to
