The Scape Goat

Read the Bible and see the Owners Manual for your life. How many of us ever read the owners manual in the car ? In the book of Leviticus Chapter 16 we read the Hebrew tradition where two kid goats are taken with sash placed around their neck. One goat is left to live , one taken into the wilderness as a sacrifice to die for the people’s sins. The sash itself turns crimson, like the colour of blood. One goat lives one dies.

Much later Jesus arrives to become the scape goat and sacrificed at the cross, crimson blood shed dying for our sins. The vision of the scape goat seems natural injustice , sacrifice as those that remain pay no price for their misdemeanour. Man being man adds insult to injury by hurling curse and abuse as the sacrifice is led away. These are often those in Leadership whose holier than thou demeanour like Pharisees cast the first stone.

We see the same today in Parliament when others are not treated equally. Owen Patterson accused of ‘ egregious behaviour ‘ playing out Consultancy roles as a paid helper is suspended and attributed the suicide of his poor wife as cause ( for she could not withstand the humiliation). One thinks of a list of others that could field teams from Cameron, Osborne, Barker and many more. The scape goat Patterson pays the price. The loss of his wife a price too much for there is no way back from suicide.

The Church of England have scape goats in the form of Carey, Percy from Canterbury and Oxford and are historically fully familiar with Leviticus and perhaps not familiar with Christ in their ways. Jesus warned them not to ‘ cast the first stone ‘ and drew that famous line in the sand. I’d love to know what He wrote.

Scape Goats are running around today and it’s an ugly game of musical chairs played by a very unkind and deceitful mankind. Society looks to blame and we must ask ourselves why. Can we live as hypocrites seeking to sacrifice someone for our own faults. It seems a very cowardly act and there are those that will stand up for the scape goat, against the proud bully types so often found in the leadership of our many Institutions.

We make people pay a price often for us all and in that there is an inherent injustice for which one day we will all need to account for as we stand before our Creator on Judgment day. Be the difference and right this wrong whenever and wherever you see that horrible injustice rear it’s ugly head. Try it.
