Back in Ghost Town today on Bond Street which these days has more pavement ( sidewalk ) than people and where bikes have priority over cars. Surprised I could park right outside my meeting venue, in shock I retreated to a Pub just off the street for a black coffee. It was the Masons Arms which was originally built in 1721 ( no not 21 minutes past 5 ) but 300 years ago. In 1939 the Building was rebuilt but the Germans failed to call last orders and here I am. It’s a great atmosphere and though I was only having a cup of the black stuff the barman greeted me like a lost brother. The Pub was and still is a famous Mayfair meeting place.
For those that don’t know London , Mayfair is that dark blue spot on the Monopoly Board and Bond Street is green. Ghost Town was quietly buzzing though the majority of shoppers propping up the pound were from the Middle East. There were few Brits on the strip. The shops look magnificent probably the best presented I’ve ever seen and the Christmas decorations illuminated above. The reality remains that these properties are some of the most expensive in the world though they are in reality brand adverts waiting for the online miracles hopefully happening online.
Coming into London with congestion and emission charging is a new business created by the green brigade yet more tax in disguise. Add to the cost of Parking and you can soon spend £50 before buying coffee. Never mind we are in London where everyone wants to be for whatever reason. The streets have narrowed over the years as the Mayor tries to squeeze out the mobile. TFL the London Transportation System is partly on strike presently and masks are mandatory which has deterred even the determined.
Anyway if I don’t hurry and get this done I’ll be late for my face to face meeting which is exciting especially after being lockdown for over 2 years, now released to roam. Things have certainly changed but the Masons Arms hadn’t. Ghost Town still has plenty of memories and plenty more to offer.
