In Hebrew there is no such word for coincidence.This weekend events from different worlds suddenly go into orbit. As people celebrate Platinum Jubilee for the Jewish people it is Shavuot and for Christians Pentecost.
Shavuot over two days is a celebration of Moses being given the Torah on Mount Sinai and Pentecost the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples in Jerusalem. Both events are 49 days after Passover and Easter. Both are gifts to equip us and empower our lives. The Jews are called to study the Torah all night over the two days but like their predecessors at Sinai for many they can’t stay awake. Pentecost comes after a long wait and ultimately by surprise for the 120 that waited in that room. Jubilee comes at the 69th year since Queen Elizabeth was anointed Queen at her coronation using the symbolic oil of anoint as seen with the Holy Spirit.
As Shavuot and Pentecost can be at differing dates it does seem strange that in 2022 they occur at this time of Platinum Jubilee and I can’t imagine it’s coincidental. As we party all night we might be reminded to stay awake. For many teenagers it is a time of intense studies for their exams , a time when they need to stay awake and like we all did burn the midnight oil.
Ironically the new Crossrail or as it is now known Elizabeth line delayed several years finally opens in the week of Jubilee. Coincidence ? I don’t think so. It is as though some things are just meant to be that there is a time for everything and there is significance in the waiting.
It is a time when our attention can be divided when there is so much going on we miss the real message. I , like perhaps the Queen will be watching events unfold at Epsom where we will see the Oaks and the Derby run over two days as we see those thoroughbred horses compete. Life can be like the 11 bus wait for ages at the bus stop then three come along together. Anyway just saying really but worth pondering at some point over the long weekend.
It does for me most of all signify a time of change , handover be it the tablets of stone or the individual empowerment, the preparation of the baton of Monarchy being handed over to Charles even down to the laying of new track to take us to new places. There is much to look forward to even in these dark times and in that we see there is hope with realization of what this life is really all about. In reality we too are passing through the track laid out for us guided and steered by Spirit and word into a future and beyond. We may differ on perceived destinations but we do know if we stop to think that this is a moment. There is no coincidence, part of the plan, the design and your journey.
