Home ownership dictates the national Politic. The English man’s home is his castle turned post war Britain towards the right wing. For years particularly in America there has been the fear of Communist infiltration towards the left wing. However since 1990 nowhere in the world has seen a greater swing right , than in China. The natural swing comes through ever increasing home ownership through the release of capitalism upon its people.
Since 1990 over 15 million homes have been created annually there, 5 times more than the combined production of America and Europe. Today circa 70% of Chinese are considered Middle Class with their own homes and cars. By 2030 a further 855 million people are expected to join the Middle Class. People with mortgages and ownership are likely to work harder not only to keep up with the Jones’ but also the Wongs and thereby there is inbuilt protection within the economy. Those entrusted with ownership will protect that which they own. It is the true meaning of the expression ‘ as safe as houses ‘
Unrest comes when those desiring home ownership are priced out of the market like the UK millennials who can’t afford it. In Britain the Property Companies , Pension Funds and even Banks ( Lloyds ) are clamoring to create homes for rent. This will in turn and in due course alter the Politics. Capitalism can turn to Socialism in the full circle of life. Equally as in China socialism has turned to Capitalism and because of that we should not be fearful to embrace the Chinese who look more to mimic America on a daily basis. To mimic is a form of commercial flattery and a safety valve for all.
The Chinese today face issues with their housing. Not surprisingly because Companies such as Evergrande are $300 billion in debt and now the China Government look set to form a bailout fund to avoid civil unrest. Meantime personal savings has risen to $1.3 trillion there. In Britain the Government have had to bail out Housing in the past and there is a market inevitability in this.
The good news remains that the Chinese people want what we in the West have had till now and all want to own a front door to their own home, it is human rights in action. The fact that Housing is an essential key to the economic model is a fact. The roof over one’s head and a bed to lie in is an essential Maslow need and the forerunner of civil peace.
Society can break down if the economics askew and it is this more than anything else that is critical. Home ownership with its creation of Middle Class is the essential. In Britain the attack is upon the Middle Class and the Politics can change. As safe as houses is key and ownership paramount. Renting causes unrest and unshared capitalism where the dangers are. To solve the Housing crisis in any nation is the stability that it brings. The Party that brings the Housing solution will last the longest, forget Truss, Starmer or Sunak bring me Home ownership and the Party that can deliver it.
