The sacking of the Chelsea FC Manager today by their new American Owners highlights the ever increasing impatience of mankind. Soccer is an inevitably precarious career but Chelsea now have had 12 Managers in 15 years, an average tenure of 1.25 years. Is this because there can only be one winner ? Probably yes but building sustainable teams now seems impossible opting for buy and sell get success quick schemes or exit.
Yesterday the 5th Prime Minister in 15 years entered Number 10 an average term of 3 years, America allow their Leader at least 4 years if they can survive living. In the world of British Business the average tenure of the Chief Executive is 4.8 years, giving them a little longer to perform.
The average marriage in the UK despite what the media would have you believe is 30 years albeit circa 40% do end in divorce. The point is we are living in the arena of short term fixing , success or out yet Marriage builds families and families take patience to nurture. Give and take is longer to sustain than Take and to Give is more rewarding than Take in the long term.
The throw away get rid of society is clearly the cause of many woes. No one gets the time to appreciate growing together winning and losing at times and seeing the enjoyment and reward in that. The new American owners at Chelsea will keep binning their Manager until something works but work it will not if we look upon it in throw away terms. Companies will flounder unless loyalty is rewarded , it is a two way street to best travel on.
Walpole served 20 years as Prime Minister, Howard 33 years as Manager of Marine FC ( never heard of them till now ) and Simon Wolfson , 33 years CEO of Next. Lastly Ron and Joyce Bond have been married for 81 years when Billy Birrell was Chelsea FC Manager. Maybe I’m just a romantic but don’t you just love marriage ? Ask Donald Trump, Boris Johnson and Thomas Tuchel. Or even better Leo Apotheker who lasted 1 year as CEO of Hewlett Packard.
