End of an Era.

When Queen Elizabeth passed away one of the dominant characteristics found was her Christian faith and her ever reliance on that foundation. It was truly her first priority and it remains to be seen if King Charles is equally fervent.

Meantime we have a Prime Minister of Indian origin. One wag told me that we’ve had the cowboys now we have the Indian. Very funny but let me tell you there’s nothing wrong with a good Indian. They are very good at business but often small minded. I should know as I’ve worked with enough of them. The Irish of course have already had an Indian leader.

Rishi is from the Punjab via Southampton and enjoyed a magnificent education then marrying into wealth ( that’s because he wasn’t stupid ). Anyway enough acidic comments , the fact is he’s made it to the top and at such a young age. Pitt was younger that’s why he was called Pitt the younger.

One problem meantime has arisen. The Prime Minister plays a key role in the choice of the Archbishop of Canterbury who heads up the Church of England ( that’s right headed up by the Monarch ). The problem is that Rishi of Hindu faith gets to choose the Anglican which is like asking the Pope to appoint the Dali Lama I would have thought.

The present incumbent Welby may need to revisit the rules and make some new arrangements. It’s been a very long time since we have had a devout Christian leading the country, even Blair converted after being PM., Rishi I recall came to power on The Hindu festival of light and when Chancellor lit candles outside Number 11. With the energy crisis looming this winter we may need those candles if the lights go out. The last time we had candles was when Heath was Prime Minister and during the 3 day week when the Miners went on strike.

The Bible is no longer the only book to swear oath upon. Sunak when becoming MP took his oath on the Hindu Book Bhagavad Gita. When King Charles is crowned it will be interesting to see what Book we are now working from or is the end of an era.

Era today gone tomorrow.

  1. In 1994 Prince Charles caused a controversy by saying he would be defender of faith rather than Defender of The Faith, which I think was a good idea at the time as it recognised that every faith is the ‘true’ faith for those who follow it. However he eventually bowed to tradition on becoming King. One of my favourite sayings about religious faith is “it’s not what you believe but how you behave that matters most.” As I’m recovering from a recent op I thought I’d watch a funny film to cheer me up today and chose the Life of Brian which I’d not seen since it was released in 1979. Putting aside all the controversy it caused the Christian community at the time, it still stands up as a superbly satirical slant on all religions. The film’s comical element has dated quite a bit but it brilliantly displays the strange propensity of many humans to believe in myths and fairy tales, and unfortunately sometimes to kill and die for those beliefs. The of end of an era I’d like to see is when humans can evolve beyond the need for any religious faith. But unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be happening any time soon.
