John McFall lost a leg in a motor accident several years ago and on Friday joined as an Astronaut the European Space Agency destined to go into Space. The para olympians show us that disability is not inability and watching wheelchair rugby last week a reminder of the brave.
Disability can take many forms, loss of limb or lucidity from accident to mental illness. Many of the disabled are not immediately recognised as emotional crutches are never seen and some are frozen mentally in their mental wheelchair. There are 14.6m or 22% of the population of Britain who are classified disabled according to the Family Resources Survey.
Brandon Flowers of the group Killers wrote his song Human at a time he was unaware of his wife’s disability but the song is about stepping out of the box and not be a ‘ dancer ‘ or following the norm. The disabled are called to step out of the box and show that their Human spirit can overcome not overpower.
The blogger suffered post sporting accident epilepsy but conquered the setback after 10 years of angst and today is free of the setback. Indeed disability is only a setback until it is seen as just another life mountain to climb. My friend ‘s daughter is willing her disabled Father to climb Everest and with that spirit we undoubtedly will seen a Hilary happening.
Young Prince Harry championed the cause of the disabled and then placed himself through life choice in his own box one day hopefully to return. Presidents have sat in wheelchairs yet were leaders of great ilk. The disabled are able to do exceedingly and abundantly, above and beyond. Look never to what is missing in a person but look at what your missing in your views and perceptions. At last Society has recognized the needs of those who can’t flow normally and look out for the signs where you can help bring awareness to all. It is unlikely that I will see John McFall in zero gravity but for me he will just be another hero from zero.
