Life expectancy is the great unknown and someone asked me this recently. My reply was a tad glib but I replied ‘ when does the washing machine break down ? ‘ The fact is that this is an unknown but be assured like life it will end. This past week was a timely reminder having attended a funeral of a relative and read the Times Obituaries including that of John Motson the football commentator aged 77.
Washing machines have a life expectancy of 10 to 13 years against UK male average life expectancy of 76. Some people go on for another 20 years of course but that’s just genetic grace. In my early years in business I was badly let down and the chap that did it famously told me that if I wanted a guarantee I should go buy a washing machine. The analogy remained in my head and today I use it to blog on the subject of matters uncertain. We are advised to expect the unexpected but in doing so we can become nervous wrecks looking out for the worst rather than hoping for the best.
The truth is we don’t know what’s around the corner or what lays ahead. We do know what lies behind of course. The fact remains are you ready ? Ready to meet your maker? The man whose funeral I attended gave his heart to Christ on his deathbed choosing to put his future in His hands after stubbornly refusing His existence during his lifetime. Unlike any washing machine or AI to come the human being has a spirit one that leaves the bodily flesh and bone on death which turn to ashes. The spirit lives on and the Christian belief is absent from the body present with The Lord. My friends who believe in something different speak of merging into nature for eternity yet I look forward to the hope of an eternal life and reunion with my ancestors and others. The washing machine probably gets recycled into something else of course, an item unknown to us.
Before you go into a bit of a spin remember life has its cycles and maybe your reading this in the final wash cycle or maybe the wash could get cut short as your life goes out of control. Your Manufacturer is on standby day and night to receive you and if you care to call Him up He will gladly answer. Try it.
