Today is Palm Sunday the commemoration of Jesus’ triumphant entry ( so called ) into Jerusalem when the populous turned out to welcome their King. Unexpectedly He was arriving on a donkey thereby fulfilling prophecy. The crowd was so ebullient that they laid out palm leaves as a carpet for the person they expected to deliver them out from Roman Rule. However Jesus was on another Mission bringing an eternal delivery but they just didn’t get it.
On entry into the City they expected Him to turn towards the Roman HQ but He turned the other way towards the Temple and they that ebullient adoring crowd felt that there was a Palm off. A week later they turned and were baying for the Romans to kill him. Yes only 5 days later they wanted crucifixion. Humanity sucks. From the carpet of psalms to the nailing on cross.
How often do we see people turn in history and our own lives. From hero to zero and decline , denounce and destroy all comes rapidly. Sir Winston Churchill the heroic leader in the Second World War was voted out of office in the same year he delivered victory. In Companies Executives that deliver one year and fail the next like Steve Jobs of Apple fame are speedily ousted. We live in a throwaway society where friendships can get swiped in a digital delete. How often do you witness having helped someone they then abuse the relationship by acting dreadfully.
Institutions of Church and State turn on their people and congregation when rejection enters and the so called safeguarding team go to work in their Star Chambers. Political leaders and Football Managers rise and die very quickly. What is it about humanity that is quick to change that fickle that turns pickle and destroys. We live in a cancel culture where at the drop of a hat you can be deleted. In Britain we seem to raise praise and then erase in that order.
The fact is you can’t rely on man and getting out whilst you are on top is good counsel. Boxers often box too long, players play too much and that brings me to what my old Colonel friend always says to me ‘ every dog has its day ‘. A week they say is a long time in Politics and a lot can happen . There is a time for everything according to Solomon.
