This May 2023 finds us in an uncertain world where ‘ what happens next is on everyone’s lips ‘Technologies are turning us around the next chapter in mankind in a world where so much has gone wrong yet there is so much hope and promise. The word ‘ maybe ‘ is no accident as it denotes uncertainty whilst the word ‘ mayhem ‘ paints a picture of chaos.
The “mayday” procedure word was conceived as a distress call in the early 1920s by Frederick Stanley Mockford, officer-in-charge of radio at Croydon Airport England. He had been asked to think of a word that would indicate distress and would easily be understood by all pilots and ground staff in an emergency. It followed the morse code SOS signal which was unusable for voice communication.
In the financial equity markets the adage ‘ sell in May and go away ‘ encouraged investors to cash in and retreat on holiday. The stock markets are at an all time high and though inflation has been roaring commodities prices have all fallen. If everyone still try to sell in May and go away then the markets would fall , crash, similar to a run on the banks which we saw with SVB then Credit Suisse when hundreds of billions were moved but these deposits only moved to another bank. When share prices fall we see the true picture of the vapour that money really is.
May in Britain sees the coronation of a new King after 70 years and the start of a new era. May is the fifth month in the Gregorian calendar, 40% through another year and the eve of Summer. It is the season of blue sky bloom and blossom. VE Day was May and so is the blogger’s birthday. Taurus is the sign of May and that’s no bull.
Back in Croydon nearly 100 years on the Airport has gone but a new distress call went out last month. No Pilots involved just an unprecedented Pilot legal action against former Council leaders who are charged of recklessly causing £1.6b debt and leading them into bankruptcy.
