All bets covered.

I took my mother once to Epsom one of the homes of horse racing. She so looked forward to the trip and I wanted her to win. In the first race there were nine horses and I put £10 to win on each one. As the horse went by the winning post I searched for the ticket and said ‘ well done Mum you’ve won. ‘ I gave her the ticket and at 9/1 odds she went and collected her £100 winnings. I lost £90 of course but it was absolutely worth every penny to see the joy on her face.

This coming Saturday all eyes will be on Westminster Abbey one of the homes of Christianity and since the 16th Century the Church of England. In much the same way the King has appeased with the inclusion of all faiths , beliefs and views with everyone getting a mention at the service . I see the merit of covering all bets so that the objective is achieved but like my Epsom event someone loses and for every gain there is a loss.

In my case it was £90 but as I say it was worth it. To the King it’s Politically correct but at what cost ? We don’t know how he personally feels for he is steered, advised and adjudicated by so many others. Appeasement is a difficult job and has its own price. We all compromise of course and without doing so we only alienate ourselves and others. Peace is always a negotiated settlement and wisdom cries out to do so.

When a stand or a belief or creed is stood by there is great satisfaction and who knows others may respect one even more when principles and tenets are maintained. These days in our multi cultural society the pulling together under one roof or banner is a force for good until mankind breaks rank ( as it does ) and one tries to dominate. When decisions are taken to accommodate everyone then we end up with a hybrid horse or the enemy called average. When we truly do pick the winner out of the nine horses the elation brings elevation. In much the same nailing the foundational Christianity to the mast will demonstrate true colours, alas this is not happening. Christianity in much the same way has done its own disservice with its numerous strands and the English Church was a split from Rome to accommodate the horse called Divorce.

As so often these days the pot calls the kettle black. There is much to look forward to meantime when 12 new pieces of music will be introduced at the service and Lloyd Webber will follow Handel with one of these. Oaths will be made, toasts will be given and the anointing under canopy a unique silent offering with chrism oil straight from Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives where the King’s Grandmother lies. The King will state that he has come to serve , a statement echoing Jesus Christ’s own words 2000 years ago. In there lies the real message that we must all serve and in doing so receive that blessing with all bets covered, all eventualities catered for and ultimately peace for us and everyone else.
