
The origin of X is derived from the Phoenician letter samekh meaning fish. It is now the 24th letter in our Alphabet and historically used to denote the unknown. We remember it as children when we played noughts and crosses and as adults Pre emojis to denote a kiss. It’s used as a delete sign and a sign of multiplication. It is the cross of Calvary on its side which Andrew the Apostle humbly died on. As a young buck I along with the rest would clamber to see an X rated movie , a film of fear or filth in that sense.
Today the genius’ of commerce are changing the names of their Corporations. Multi Musk has renamed Twitter X. One wonders is he fearful of all the $4 billion debt that surrounds it or is it a sub conscious delete of regret for ever having bought it. Or is he twinning with his Space X and his seismic plans . Will Tesla become X plated cars soon. Other greats like Zuckerberg have change Facebook to Meta and Aberdeen and Standard Life dropped their vowels to become an unpronounceable Abrdn. Are we in fact losing the English language with this and our emojis exclamations. Are we Shaking out Shakespeare?
Communications are becoming briefer and getting to the point is more than the point. We love short and sweet. In China Xi is a common name I have not come across X but I’m sure someone is about to name their baby X. The letter X when pronounced is EX and EX is referred to when a relationship ends ‘ my EX ‘ . It denotes the past , the over and the end. On the Motorway X means closed don’t even go there and in that sense the picture mimics Mandarin. Cave men denoted things with pictures on walls and we could be in revert. X marks the spot is a famous idiom and for those who can’t write can make their mark on a document with it.
Generation X ( those born between 1960s and late1970s are the disaffected and directionless ) and it is a label I don’t like because like all generalisations they are inaccurate. The fact is the world is changing largely because we can no longer focus or live with the same old same old and more worryingly there is a restlessness with humans, a need to move on but where to ?
