I spent one special hour yesterday with a friend. My mobile was put away and I listened to him. My friend , a man of the cloth had lost his wife of many years and we spoke fondly of her. He was sad yet with loving enthusiasm recounted one story.
On a visit around Skye in Scotland whilst walking with her they came across a tiny Scot’s pine sapling which his wife lovingly plucked from the ground and placed in tissue, took home and planted it in her garden. Many years later and after her death and heavy storm the tree came down. A careful , thoughtful neighbour took part of the base of the trunk and lovingly dried and oiled it to form a timber stand. The neighbour presented the base of the tree to my friend as a memory of his wife deceased. On the timber stand stood a photograph that my wife had taken at a lunch a few years ago when we were all together. The photo had been front of cover on her memorial service brochure.
Two gestures coming together many years later, a sapling plucked and a photograph taken now comfort to my friend left behind. Like dots connected, no coincidence but part of the matrix plan of God, a deft touch of His hand and a reminder of being in the small of our lives.
I recounted as a teenager when I left school of working in the local cemetery and of one task to plant trees. Thirty years later those trees had grown and both my parents were buried in their shade. In Hebrew there is no such word for coincidence.
God is in the detail , the small and the minuscule of our lives. Recall coincidences in your life and see them for what they are and their intentions. More God incidence than coincidence and in the words of Steve Jobs the Apple founder ‘ the dots connect ‘ . Connect the coincidences in your life, spend an hour like I did yesterday and listen to a friend and in the listening let go and let God speak to you.
