We seem to be going full circle. Over 150 years ago the horse was our means of inner City transport, horse and cart for deliveries and coach and horse for public commute, single horse for personal travel. Average horse speed 17 miles per hour.
150 years on and following discovery of the motor car engine we are travelling 3 miles per hour faster. Mankind is seeking inter planetary travel but we can no longer travel in earth’s cities easily. With horses they left a certain type of deposit on our Roman streets. Now a fiscal deposit is required for a different type of rear end emission. ULEZ which raised £224m last year in revenue is now set to raise £425m as the area of charge has been extended. Congestion Charge , an entry tax at the City gates brings in around £300m a year. The oxymoron is that the three quarters of a billion pound of annual revenue is a tax on travel and a penalty on driving yet a solution to City income streams. You can it seems have it both ways, a proper two way street.
Cycle lanes and narrow roads make the journey even more difficult as do yellow lines and car park costs, traffic wardens and traffic lights. The fact is we are being brought to a halt. Dick Turpin was a circa 1710 Highwayman who charged people for coming into cities and was eventually taken to York to be executed for doing so. Our Mayor is now regarded as a Dick Head and many want to take him to York as he systematically ruins London. Yes it was Boris who introduced the charge but this latest charge extended is a bridge too far indeed the bridges or some of them are shut , Hammersmith broken and Putney soon to go.
The ULEZ charge is an antidote for clean air but idling traffic in 20mph zones squeezed like sardines into the tarmac. It may well be that everyone gets together to now boycott going into London , watch then what happens as the £15m weekly income disappear and achieve the so called Mayor’s Mission of clean air. That’ll do it. We can get horses and whip crap away we go. Bring back then that other Dick, Whittington who can minstrel his way through the City and back to the Mayor’s Office. Khan is no longer able and must leave. We could charge him an exit fee for his vast contribution to the ruination of the Capital.
