I sat recently with friends outside a coffee shop. A place where you order the drinks , give your name and they bring when ready to your table. The permutations of order are enumerable and the Barista needs great memory and training.
As we sat outside the waitress opened the door with tray in hand and cried ‘ Cleopatra ‘. I shouted back ‘ she’s dead ‘ . The waitress didn’t blink as she realised her order sat somewhere inside. I then went to the counter and gave the young lady the order for three different coffees. She asked for my name and I replied ‘ Fred Astaire ‘. It was as good a name as any and she didn’t look quizzically at me but replied ‘ ok Fred we will bring it straight out to you ‘ . Yes she was a young lady and had probably never heard of him but I wondered if I had said ‘ Adolph Hitler ‘ would she have reacted ? ‘ OK Adolph we will bring it straight out to you ‘
Five minutes later another waitress opened the door and shouted ‘ Fred Astaire ‘. I put my hand up but none of the 10 or so others looked up to see if the Hollywood legendary dancer was supping black coffee in their remote area.
I wondered if people are just on automatic these days oblivious to what’s really happening. I recalled a Barista in an Airport Coffee shop asking me did I want it here or to take away ? I mean why would anyone be in a departure area if they weren’t going away from something.
If I had been asked for a name then I would have given ‘ Neil Armstrong’. Can anyone remember him taking his flight to the moon ? Anyway try it yourself this week , pick an historic name of someone and see the reaction.
If they do recognise your nom de Guerre just smile and enjoy the fun of it all. They may on the other hand reply ‘ You for coffee ‘ and you can then take leave.
