Pancakes, Penance, Hearts, Ashes, #Wednesday.

Present yourself to the Priest and repent of your sins then eat as many pancakes as you can. That’s Shrove Tuesday in a nutshell without chocolate. Historically it was the day to feast on the eve of Lent. It’s date varies depending on when Easter is though coincidentally #Wednesday is Valentines Day for those in love , falling in love and in love with love.

The ash being crossed on the forehead is a reminder that from dust we came and dust we return. I know bit of a morbid thought on Valentine’s Day but blame Gregorian for that. Meantime Valentinus was a Roman Priest known for counselling Christians ahead of them dying in the Coliseum in Rome. He was also known to have distributed love hearts on parchment to people to remind them of the love of God and in that he became the patron of love. The fact he was himself decapitated on the 14th February and elevated to sainthood in 496AD led to today’s Valentine’s Day. Some folk do lose their head when they fall in love.

Anyway I thought the blogger’s explanation of the coming events may be useful and tonight I’ll do a three in one and take the wife out for a pancake dinner, tell her how much I love her and confess all my shortcomings. I will remind her not to be too harsh on me for dust I am and we don’t want a dust up. I know it’s a cheap date but you can actually eat a pancake over the three course meal . Try it tonight.
