Calcutta Cup

For the fourth successive time Scotland beat England by nine points today to win the Calcutta Cup . Not achieved since 1896 it’s another historic milestone in the cup. But why is this British Isles Rugby match between two teams of Braveheart profile compete for a cup named after an Indian city. Calcutta is the anglicised name of Kolkata in east Benegal of Mother Theresa fame. The cup was crafted from 270 silver rupees melted and crafted by Indian silversmiths.

The cup has three handles representing king cobra and an elephant on top. India is not associated with Rugby however. India do not play soccer for fear that every time they get a corner they might build a corner shop. Meantime India is on the up , economically it is rising and they are investing internationally especially in Britain .

Their GDP now outstrips Britain and its population of 1.4 billion has surpassed China. Why not then pay homage to the nation and have a cup named after a city played for in such an important sports match between the olde firms. Well done Scotland and though England have won the cup 45 times more , Scotland are catching up. The cup will be filled with a wee dram and a few beers tonight followed by an Indian curry in homage to those wonderful Indian silversmiths.
