Only a week on from crucifixion Jesus is found on the beach on the Sea of Galilee with a cooked fish and bread breakfast prepared for His disciples. Fish is not the normal breakfast dish but it is so healthy full of protein and a great kick start to the day.
Especially the case if you’ve been out all night trying to catch some with no luck. Then a man on the beach shouts direction to take the boat out again and throw the nets to the right. Peter not knowing who’s making this suggestion follows the order and miraculously the nets fill. At that point he gets it , puts his clothes on then jumps out of the boat to greet Jesus.
We are told that 153 fish are caught. Why we are told that remains a numerical unknown but a detail not to be ignored or insignificant. Noah’s flood lasted 153 days and was considered a victory over sin in the manner repeated a week ago at the cross.
It’s the third time Jesus has appeared to His disciples since resurrection day and once again He’s letting them know that death has been defeated. What is surprising is that despite being with Jesus for three years. Peter soon goes back to the day job of fishing though we know man’s stomach often dictates mind.
Jesus however wants him now to go out as the fisher of man , bring in the nations as he throws out the net. The net is still being thrown out today 2000 years on in a world population that has grown 40 fold. Yes there are a lot more fish in the sea. Certain Christian denominations still eat fish only on Friday in honour of the beach breakfast I guess.
Incidentally the grill is a charcoal grill we are told which I can smell from here and no doubt Peter bread ( pun on pitta intended).
