As you read this blog please pause and ponder. The head photo of the universe was taken by the James Webb telescope launched in December 2021. Tonight the telescope is about to set its sights on another planet K2-18b which is 124 light years away from earth. The planet is 2.5 times larger than earth and travelling at 38,000 mph would take 2.2million years to reach. Certainly not a doable in my lifetime.
Now the incredible news. The Scientists have detected a gas emanating from the planet which indicates life being there. If someone from there has discovered earth then they may well be on their way to see us. Don’t worry 2.2million years to get here and we will never meet them. Unless they are fast and I reckon they could be.
Humanity is raising the bar for its ingenuity and in my lifetime I was amazed with a Polaroid let alone the images we see today.
The spacecraft Voyager left earth 47 years ago and after losing connection with earth was reprogrammed and today some 15 billion miles away has reconnected with the folk on the ground. Some relatives we never see who live 15 miles from us let alone 15 billion.
Now here is the wonder the speck you see on the photo below is of earth taken from Voyager. We are a speck, a minuscule an insignificant pip on the landscape. In the rounds of the realm let’s all stop and see our lives and the reality of ourselves against the backcloth of creation. Passing through for no more than 100 years we must get real and get ready to realise that we are all a grain of sand on a beach. We need desperately to make peace for time is running out. A mere speck , a light flicker in the darkness. We fret we worry and for what ? We strain , we stress we work like no tomorrow and yet we fight, we fail to forgive often lack gratitude. So far so good it is not so far so what I say. Why do we behave the way we do ? We procreate, we delegate responsibilities, we blame , we name, we cancel we boast we twitch we itch. we fail we nail and in time we die. We are part of creation for what I don’t know but whilst we are here let’s make every effort to help others , to be a difference and be a speck in others lives. We don’t have the answers to the questions we don’t know to ask.
We live on a wondrous earth in a wondrous moment in history and we give thanks for the very air we breathe. We are blessed, here each one of us for a reason in this planetary jigsaw. It’s fantastic, so far so very good.
