Bill from Thames Water

Bill from Thames Water wrote to me recently telling me to keep up the good work as my consumption was down 23%. I was perplexed for being thanked by a Company whose sales of their product was down especially as they were themselves battling against £15.2billion of debt and barely keeping their head above water. Whoever heard of a company pleased at selling less ? No wonder they are in trouble.

Bill told me that in the previous 6 months my water consumption was equivalent to 116,000 cups of tea. I drink Yorkshire Gold Tea and a box of 80 bags is £4 or 5 pence a cup. If I had of drunk 116,000 cups of tea I would have spent £8,300 on tea bags.

I didn’t have the heart or time to respond to Bill and tell him that the property was vacant for half the billing period during building works and my eco performance was fake. Mathematically in fact my consumption was 50% up and equivalent to 232,000 cups of tea or 1,274 daily cups. To boil the kettle for that many would have crashed the National Grid. I prefer Bill’s comparison analysis of 387 showers or 32 per week averaging over 4 per day.

My usage was equivalent to 363 baths but as I don’t even possess a Bath I didn’t bother. The fact is these comparative analysis to help visualise consumption are great if they were real , like we are told the meter readings are from where these statistics are found. The fact is there is no tea swilling cleaner person in the location to be found if all this were true.

Bill continues to dump sewage into the Thames and in Paris they were unable to use their river for the Olympics which was in Seine. Insanity seems to reign over Thames Water and if what the actual bill equates to per usage is 26 pence per shower or less than one penny a cup with tea bag added 6 pence. Thames Water have seriously got their numbers wrong which is why the cost of water needs to rise dramatically and it will. Failing that the whole thing will fail and fall into a sea of delusion. The system needs fixing Bill.
