Last evening as I sat with my family in our son’s 300 year cottage there was a knock at the door. A tall man stood , the son of the previous owner whose Mother lived there previously. He asked if he could possibly enter to see his Mother’s old home.

As he entered sadness came over his face and I could see a tear of reminisce as thoughts of his Mother ran through and choked he asked if he could ask his wife to join him. We spoke briefly, we offered him a drink but he could not stay. It was Christmas Eve and he was reminiscing.
As he left I pondered the previous 300 Christmas years and all that lived here gone on to those other places. Memories legacies and lovelies. I thought of my first years in London helping the milkman with horse and cart delivering milk at 4,00am of my England soccer kit which was given by my mother that day. I thought of the chimney smoke out of London and the excitement of Christmas, the journey to Church and the sounds of greetings that day. Most of all the glorious prospect of lunch cooked by Mum and eaten by all that we shared with. Of Queen Elizabeth and her post lunch Christmas speech. All passed away , reminiscing.
Today we remember the birth of Jesus , born in Bethlehem where I once visited and today torn by division. Much of course to ponder and of the shepherds and wise men that visited before me. All who came to see the baby great shepherd.

Christmas is a time of reminiscences, reflection , reunion and rejoicing . For some it’s a sad time where many are lonely even as they share the table. Reminiscing is within and there are many without. Last night at the Royal Albert Hall the Salvation Army brass band played in concert. I love the brass band and the Salvation Army whose sounds provide the perfect platform of reminiscence. Founded by the great William Booth and his wife in Victorian England they gave provisions to the destitute of roof and food. Today their work is continuing all over the world . The great General Booth below , a Father Christmas if there was ever one.

So today spare a thought for your loved ones past look back fondly as they look down on you to see what you are up to and remember the greatest gift you leave is your legacy with all the memories that linger of you in the minds of many. For those reminisces are the treasure held in heart and mind in life’s storehouses and for the journey ahead.
