It was the best of times , it was the worst of times , it was Financial Times. The opening line from Charles Dickens’ Tale of Two Cities prompted this blog.
At Christmas there was a mix up with my direct debit for my FT app which painstakingly I tried to rectify . Alas it turned into a debacle so I cancelled my subscription and asked for my nigh on £600 refund. They agreed and said a refund was made 30th December. I never received it and I queried. The next day I received an e mail saying that they were sorry to see me leave.
Two days later I received a special offer of a 33% discount to renew my annual subscription. I have still not received my refund and queried again as to why. Today they wrote to me saying that there was now going to be an investigation into my situation.
The digital age was supposedly going to bring efficiency to the max and AI is going to change the world. However the quill and ink days of Dickens with bought ledgers still look more efficient to me. Anyway NO FT NO COMMENT.
That’s from London , meantime from Washington DC we are on the verge of the eve of making America Great Again. Outgoing President Biden said that these last 4 years have been the worst or one of the toughest of times in the 250 year history of America. Are we entering the best of times ? If part of America being great again ( weren’t they always great ) is bringing peace to Gaza and Ukraine , Greenland , Canada and the Panama Canal then bring it on. Like FT I think DT has a monumental task to do all this and we wish him well.
Nothing lasts forever , from an FT subscription to a Trump Presidency . We will always see both the best and worst of times. We remain though with Great Expectations from Bleak House to The White House, with many a Twist to come. Finally the last word from FT who beckoned me back today with a 40% discount offer , declined again in a Scrooge like moment. Refund in the post. Now owned by the Japanese Company Nikkei. Oh dear what an unfortunate name. What the Dickens is going on there.
