The Oxford Dictionary definition of Restoration includes restoring something to its former condition. Sir George Downing built number 10 and 11 Downing Street in 1682 and it is the HQ of the Prime Minister and in case of emergency the PM lives in a flat in Number 11 just in case war breaks out, the economy crashes or a virus spreads and he needs to be on hand to deal. No surprise therefore that after over 300 years the flat might need a lick of paint, some heating , a hot bath and a stove to make some Horlicks before bedtime, even a bed to lie on.
Surely the leader of the nation should be looked after during his tenancy which though rent free is still likely to be circa 7 years only at best. Take into account the job pays £3000 a week before his neighbour taxes him then i believe we should be willing to make him or her comfortable. Alas not it seems as the poor man’s fiancée in her wish to do up the flat has caused great angst. At a cost of £200,000 the nation is in headline uproar and her man has had to claim that it was his money that is paying for it. Really how could we possibly allow our leader to suffer the indignity of having to do this. I doubt if it’s true but let’s see what is the real truth over the days to come. At a time we’ve borrowed over £900billion to fight a virus could we not fork out the £200k to have done this ?
In 1961 Jacqueline Kennedy did up the living quarters in the White House as national expense equivalent to £330,000. Emmanuel Macron did up the Elysee Palace for him and his school teacher in 2018 and opened up a boutique to fund it. That good old Communist leader from Russia Mr P though denied it acquired a £200 million mansion outside Moscow to live in at weekends. Then don’t forget Meghan who before leaving UK paid £2m to do up a cottage in Berkshire. Leaders deserve their temporary treats whilst in office so what is it about DIY Britain that offends people.
Do we really expect our Prime Minister to trip down to Homebase and don the white overall up a ladder and do it himself. Is his fiancée really be expected to give up her flat in Camberwell and live in slum surroundings ? I hope not. Imagine if there is an emergency and Boris needs to reach for the turpentine to get that paint off his hands before he decides to get blood on his hands. Is he really going to have to peal that wallpaper off before he peals yet another billion pounds from his Government wad.
The World is going mad, priorities are askew and we need to wake up. The remuneration of our leader is poor which is why they often leave office and abandon ethical practice to lobby their old mates and produce begging bowls and muddle in shark infested waters of commerce. Pay nuts and get Monkeys or get Monkeys and go nuts, which way are we going ?
Let’s restore dignity to high office and not look like complete idiots. If our leaders become a laughing stock, if we do not honour them with respect then we are to blame if our Society goes further downhill. Let us seek full restoration of all that meets the responsibility of High Office. Come on Brexit Britain we are losing it. Restore and quickly before it’s too late.
