Let’s talk turkey this 400th Thanksgiving.

The American Heritage Dictionary says that the idiom ‘ let’s talk turkey ‘ means let’s speak frankly , let’s be real, to get to the point. The same Heritage USA has a day of gratitude where families gather around the table to share a turkey meal and talk turkey in love with others thankful for all they have in the land of Stars and Stripes. The day is called Thanksgiving the first of which was in 1621 and now falls in the fall on the last Thursday of November.

The United States of America has much to be thankful for as those peoples that went there from every corner of the earth have made this still the most powerful nation on the earth with immense wealth and talent. Founded on Christian principles its Founding Fathers found much. Rich in all natural resources and sharing all micro climates in one nation diversity abounds and has combined an innovative very able people.

However in recent years the crown has slipped The excess of life in the west, the constant pull of the new world digital, the greed of a few and the defacing of the gospel by rogue leaders has highlighted the cracks in the wall. The American dream has in part become a nightmare. Unnecessary wars have scarred many as their young men and women were sent to police parts of the planet where they had no business. Their second amendment rights have led to atrocious massacres yet their weapons could not stop the overrun of their Congress. Litigation is a major industry with 60% of all the world’s lawyers there milking the commercial cows on Wall Street and beyond .

Today America from outside looks divided like it was in 1861 to 1865 when Civil War raged. Difference in opinions are a good thing of course it adds to diversity yet when difference leads to violence it’s time to talk turkey and sort things out. To do that you need foundations, benchmarks and boundaries, indeed Christianity provided that for many but with that under pressure dangers loom. Leaders need their moral compass but in recent times the leaders seem to have lost the compass and the direction to go in seems unclear, the needle is frantic.

In the same week that their first Catholic President was assassinated in Texas 58 years ago the second Catholic President is at odds with Rome and that doesn’t bode well when the same church suffers litigation for child abuse in America and beyond. Other religions now proffer their offerings as the way forward and beat the path in new USA. A Muslim President may come before a female President unless of course Joe falls permanently asleep . The titans of business meantime Musk and Bezos are trying desperately to get us all out of here with their magnificent space exploration.

I’m sure America are thankful for getting away from Britain and though we apparently have a special relationship we still haven’t gotten a trade deal post Brexit and were told to join the queue ( the British love a queue ). Meantime NBC have paid an enormous amount to screen our soccer and their Movie and Media Industries are creating new studios here in UK. Our NHS may be next as with colossal running costs mounting the Cavalry may get called upon. Let’s start talking turkey and pray for leaders in White House , Church House and Your House to find a way a new way to keep America great and an example of living together no matter what colour or creed. Let those leaders be judged by the content of their character that old fashioned inherent quality. God bless America and enjoy that turkey ( save me a breast please ). Happy Thanksgiving.
