Apathy

As we enter the Christmas season of December, the Blogger is writing on some of the emotions we are likely to encounter. All human emotions which we may or may not experience ourselves. Today the Blogger writes about apathy, that’s right the lack of interest or passion about things. From the Greek word for emotion and passion, pathos we derive apathy and we encounter those who are apathetic. We also encounter those who are pathetic , I know a few pathetic people but that’s different to apathy. Often apathy is a path ( no pun intended) of self destruct and which it is classified as a mental illness.

Post lockdown there is a general air of apathy in the public arena, the why bother brigade are out in force and often in the service industry we meet it. A barista in Starbucks was so apathetic this week I could not bring any cheer to her even are giving my name as Batman for the drink I was ordering. She dryly asked me to spell it which made me smile at least. Most people no longer watch the news as they have been overloaded with Brexit, Covid and Greta Thunberg.

The new GB news channel has tried to bring spark into media but they relegated themselves this week to bring a psychic on the programme to tell us that Boris Johnson would soon be stepping aside or rather pushed out of office. Who cares anyway and that is the theme of apathy. Who cares who governs us it doesn’t matter. Who cares if people vaccinate who cares about anything.

We see this now when we seek out humanity for help, we dial numbers to be met by robots. Try paying the ULEZ charge on the phone it is an uphill task something one would set for entry into the SAS. Then if you travel abroad the apathy one meets is unbelievable, try filling those locator forms, you need a degree in computing. As we no longer speak to Banks you are on your own with that app and God forbid you forget the codes, passwords and secret answers to your favourite colour you will sink.

Christmas is a time for joy supposedly but there seems apathy abounding despite the wonderful Christmas decorations that have appeared in London. The Cranes with their red fairy lights and the sea of red lights on the motorway just driving home for Christmas add to the tinsel take. Anyway let’s cheer up , today Christmas carols get played on the Radio and Classic FM will get out of their Rutter and shake off that apathy.

Hopefully my son will leave his bedroom and his apathetic apartment called home to enchant us with his wit , debate and dialogue or will he remain buried in himself? Apathy abounds but there is no need for it arise and walk get off that mental mat, learn a new language, start reading books , get fit , get ready , embrace , start giving to others and see yourself receive double. There is no room for apathy no time to waste , buy yourself an egg timer for Christmas and contemplate the sands of time. Time is running out, they’re making no more of it for you my friend and now is the moment just make the very most of it. Chuck away apathy and let’s make the world a better place, eat your heart out Greta.
