Putin on my top hat…..

Having heard the name Putin all day I was relieved when the Fred Astaire’s song Putting on my top hat , tying up my white tie and brushing up my tails. and the lyrics came into my head. In a fun moment I sang

Putin on my top hat, tying up my red tie and sharpening up my nails. The Irving Berlin song featured in the 1935 film Top Hat which starred Fred. Now everyday we hear will he or won’t he news bulletins and it’s getting very tedious. Vlad the invader longs for those old USSR days as he seeks to Yalta history and take us ‘ Back to the USSR ‘ that wonderful 1968 Beatles song which told us ‘ the Ukraine girls really knock us out ‘ and maybe that’s what Vlad longs for. The song also told us that ‘ Joe Joe was a man, thought he was a loner ‘ and indeed Stalin certainly was. But what does Vlad really want ? I haven’t got a clue but could someone ask him ?

Music allows us to fade from reality for a moment and the dark realities of January make us long for a release. Brexit then Covid now Putin can it get any worse ? Is this WWW 3 or just another icicle moment , in a very Cold War. It was in 1935 that Hitler was ranting whilst Fred danced and we ignored him then. Is Vlad getting ready to ruin all our lives ? So many questions and few answers but the relief that music brings. Humour is of course critical and no one’s angry when they’re laughing.

At the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis in June 1962 Ray Charles was number one in the UK with ‘ I can’t stop loving you ‘ . Perhaps we need to stream a copy of that to Vlad and try stop the nonsense and work it out. Back to the Beatles then and as they all said in 1965 ‘ We can work it out ‘ because ‘ Life is very short for fussing and fighting’

Putin on my top hat , tying up my peace tie, staying on the rails.
