Grains of Sand.

I woke up this morning with a sense of Great insignificance after having seen the pictures from the James Webb Telescope. All my troubles seemed crass and more importantly a waste of thought time. In the round my circa three score and ten adds up to little and life really is like a vapour.

Seeing the Cosmic Cliffs of the Carina Nebula over 13 billion years back dwarfed my photos of West Wittering beach last weekend. The James Webb telescope was up there some 1 million miles away as I lay in bed, clicking and relaying all these incredible images of the origin of it all.

I read that the Stellar Graveyard of the Southern ring nebula some 2500 light years away which for those who don’t know what a light year even looks like is 14,750 trillion miles away ( no service stations on that motorway ). If you’re not overwhelmed as I am then you must be in some graveyard somewhere. The point is the madness , the madness that here on earth we are still killing each other, trafficking children , starving to death and destroying this planet , we too are heading for the graveyard.

To think that there is no God that created this cosmic mix is also a madness. Jeremiah told us in 5.22 that God made the sand a boundary for the sea. He also made space a boundary for the planet earth where we are minutely positioned for the moon and sun to bring us our very days and control the tides and carry the sand.

This vast expanse that we are looking at echoes David the Psalmist in Psalm 139, 17/18, when he rhetorically asks God ‘ how vast are the sum of your thoughts, were I to count them would outnumber the grains of sand ‘ Now you know why I woke up as on a beach next to another grain and preparing for another day being moved along , walked over and at some point washed up with life’s challenges. My brain is not capable of contributing to the 20,000 NASA engineers with the nouse to get that telescope up there and delivering what we see. Then I thought ok, God created them too and me so I just better get on with it and play my part whilst I’m still here. I felt then less insignificant and assured we are all part of this cosmic plan of His.

  1. Dear qbitblogger
Whilst I share your wonder in the face of the cosmos, I think that madness lies in thinking there is a God who created all this. To begin with, which God is it? The God of the Jewish Torah, or the Christian Bible, or the Muslim Koran? And then, which of the ‘isims’ within these religions holds the real ‘truth’? There are plenty to choose from: catholics, protestants, shia, sunni, and many many more. Over the centuries, and continuing today, these believers have been torturing and killing each other in the name of their one true God. For me, this is true madness!
I much prefer to stay with the mystery and wonder of not knowing.

I urge you to test drive a relationship with Jesus Christ. Everything else is religion. I will pray for you. I hope the test drive goes well! He is the great I am, He calls us to love. I am not looking for an argument I just wish everyone could experience life and His abounding love the way I have.

  2. Among the insecurity caused by the fact of believing that we are not creatures and knowing that we are the work of a creator I prefer the latter concept of life, because I know that surely the Creator knows the functioning of what he has created. Consequently, he knows me and understands me much better than I know myself. This certainty reassures me because just as when an object is broken, it is brought to be repaired by the one who made it, in the same way when man returns to the one who made it he finds his right balance.

  3. We are all just vessels, consumed by the creator and guided by the Holy Spirit!!!!! Thank you for this post, it’s hard to believe that He desires a one on one relationship with each one of us! Look at all He has done.
