Is it just another Commercial celebration or should we celebrate our Mothers ( we all have one ). I tell my kids ‘ every day is Mother’s Day ‘ as I tell them that ‘ every day is Christmas Day ‘ or my wife ‘ every day is Valentine’s Day ‘. Yes they all look at me as though I’ve lost the plot.
In America there are around 115 million Mother’s Day cards sold and in Brexit. Britain we spend around £65 million each year on cards. Then add the flowers, the take out costs and it all adds up to a cost. Come on kids we all know they are worth it and more. I say kids but children are always children to their Mum even if they don’t recognize them anymore as the lay sick with dementia or some other debilitating attack. The very young don’t know what day it is and as long as you change their nappy.
Some have lost their Mothers this year but they can still pay their respects today, some have found their mother for the first time having been estranged for whatever reason. Mr Putin is to be. Arrested for separating those Ukraine kids from their Mothers. War does that sort of thing.
As I write a friend has appeared saying he can’t stop as he has to get back to make his wife a cup of tea as it’s Mother’s Day and let her have a lie in. I enquired if his generosity extended to making her breakfast once a year.
Mother is a verb and a verb is a word in action. It essentially means to care and comfort and boy do they do that. Some Mothers walk away from their children which we may not all understand but it happens. Some of course step up to the plate and become step mothers and that is an act of choice not an act of nature.
Whatever the situation Mother is Mum is the best it will get and for that reason get out there today and be the difference in their lives. Ironically Mother’s Day falls on the fourth Sunday of lent when many of them have given up chocolate but you can still go and give them what selfishly they want most. Your time.
Another great read Martin thank you
