Orkward Moment.

Not many people have been to Orkney that archipelago north of Scotland. The Vikings did and until 1472 it belonged to Norway and was an ancient burial ground for the horned men. Instead of Norway the 22000 inhabitants now want to go Another Way. The Councillors have voted 16-10 to find an alternative means of Governance. Neglected by UK the Orcadians feel they have had enough.

The Blogger visited the place previously and found vast peace there as there was very little to do.,There we’re no trees as the wind blew them away yet I recall there was a warm welcome and fresh fish out of the waters of the North Seas. Reached by ferry it is very much a stranded isle and explorers like Rae took off from Kirkwall into the Artic.

The Vikings moored their long boats at Scapa Flow a thousand years ago and it was the British base of the Royal Navy in the two world wars when ships German and British met their end and today you can still see the wreckage. it’s secluded location is very much it’s greatest asset but I am not sure how they will survive alone. Maybe they could join the EU or become an offshore financial centre. The fishing and tourist business would be insufficient revenue reapers to stand alone for too long.

It’s an Orkward moment for the Island as to which way they will go and I can’t see them playing in the World Cup soon as the ball would get blown away on home matches. They could link up with the USA of course and in turn those Wall Street raiders could mimic the Vikings as a platform into Europe. In the alternate China would grab it and have their own Hong Kong in Europe. The scenarios are endless but one thing for sure Tuesday’s decision was an historic moment. It’s a lovely little island and worth spending a few days there but not for long unless your writing your memoirs or locating your Navy there.
